We have all heard the message that exercising on a regular basis is good for our health, and this is supported by scientific evidence. In fact, exercise is multipotent, meaning it enhances the functions of multiple organ systems and reduces the risks of multiple chronic diseases. Exercise truly is medicine and there is no substitute. However, like any other treatment, to achieve desired outcomes the type and dose of the prescription must first be determined.
To most effectively treat a particular health problem or set of disease risks, key questions remain: How much exercise? How often? What type of exercise is optimal? How does it work? The scientists of the UAB Center for Exercise Medicine seek to provide answers to these important questions.
